That very night Bel·shazʹzar the Chal·deʹan king was killed.

And Da·riʹus the Mede received the kingdom; he was about 62 years old

As I kept watching, look! there was a male goat coming from the west crossing the surface of the whole earth without touching the ground.

And the goat had a conspicuous horn between its eyes. Daniel 8:5

Then the male goat exalted itself exceedingly, but as soon as it became mighty, the great horn was broken; then four conspicuous horns came up instead of the one, Daniel 8:8

But when he has stood up,

his kingdom will be broken and be divided toward the four winds of the heavens,

but not to his descendants, Daniel 11:8 for his kingdom will be uprooted

 (Da 11:3, 4) Furthermore, it was written: “And that one having been broken, so that there were four that finally stood up instead of it, there are four kingdoms from his nation that will stand up, but not with his power.” (Da 8:22)

It was, therefore, no mere historical coincidence that the empire was divided among four of Alexander’s generals: Seleucus Nicator taking Mesopotamia and Syria; Cassander, Macedonia and Greece; Ptolemy Lagus, Egypt and Palestine; and Lysimachus, Thrace and Asia Minor.

¹⁶ According to history, the small horn was an offshoot of one of the four symbolic horns—the one farthest to the west. This was the Hellenistic kingdom of General Cassander over Macedonia and Greece.

Later, this kingdom was absorbed by the kingdom of General Lysimachus, the king of Thrace and Asia Minor. In the second century before our Common Era,

these western sectors of the Hellenistic domain were conquered by Rome.

And by the year 30 B.C.E., Rome took over all the Hellenistic kingdoms, making itself the sixth world power of Bible prophecy.

But the Roman Empire was not the small horn of Daniel’s vision,

for that empire did not continue till “the appointed time of the end.”—Daniel 8:19.

The four world powers represented by the four metals of Nebuchadnezzar’s dream were

the Babylonian Empire (gold head),

Medo-Persia (silver breasts and arms),

Greece (copper belly and thighs),

and the Roman Empire (iron legs).

18. How did Rome continue to exercise domination over Europe for centuries after the removal of its last emperor?

¹⁸ The Roman World Power, however, did not end with the removal of its last emperor in Rome in 476 C.E. For many centuries, papal Rome continued to exercise political, and especially religious, domination over Europe. It did so through the feudal system, in which most inhabitants of Europe were subject to a lord, then to a king. And all kings acknowledged the authority of the pope.

Thus the Holy Roman Empire with papal Rome as its focal point dominated world affairs throughout that long period of history called the Dark Ages.

In 383 C.E., the usurper Magnus Maximus withdrew troops from northern and western Britain

“England had been a second-rate power. Its wealth was slight compared with that of the Netherlands. Its population was much less than that of France. Its armed forces (including its navy) were inferior to Spain’s.”

Britain evidently was an insignificant kingdom then, making up the symbolic small horn of the fourth beast. But that was to change.

Although Britain considered it’s colonies to be sovereign territory, it did not afford them the same rights and privileges which were enjoyed on the British mainland.

Throughout the 1760’s and 1770’s, relations between Britain and it’s Thirteen Colonies in America became increasingly strained due to parliament taxing the colonies without their consent or representation.

Many within the Thirteen Colonies considered this a breach of their rights as Englishmen and formally renounced the authority of parliament in 1775, resulting in the outbreak of revolution.

Britain sent troops to quell the rebelling colonists but in the following year of 1776, the leading political figures of the colonies assembled to form the Second Continental Congress and declared their independence from Britain.

After a protracted war of 8 years, Britain’s military forces in the colonies were finally defeated

1776, The United States of America recognised as an independent nation.

THE FEET OF IRON AND CLAY  Daniel 2:41-43, 44

(In the appointed time of The End, The last Days),

In the days of those kings the God of heaven

will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed.

And this kingdom will not be passed on to any other people.

It will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms,

and it alone will stand forever,

Daniel 2:41-43

And just as you saw the feet and the toes to be partly of clay of a potter and partly of iron,

the kingdom will be divided, but some of the hardness of iron will be in it,

just as you saw the iron mixed with soft clay.

And as the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of clay,

so the kingdom will be partly strong and partly fragile.

Just as you saw iron mixed with soft clay, they will be mixed with the people;

but they will not stick together, one to the other, just as iron does not mix with clay.

King Nebuchadnezzar said of Jehovah, Daniel's God:

Truly your God is a God of gods and a Lord of kings and a Revealer of secrets, because you were able to reveal this secret.  Daniel 2:47
